Canada Eases Health Insurance Requirements for Super Visa Applicants

The Canadian government has officially announced that it is loosening the health insurance requirements for Super Visa applicants, which is great news for those looking to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada for extended visits.

Starting on January 28, 2025, parents and grandparents applying for a Canadian Super Visa can now meet the health insurance requirement by purchasing coverage from non-Canadian insurers.

Previously, Super Visa applicants were required to obtain health insurance exclusively from a Canadian provider. Super Visa holders must still have valid private health insurance in place for the entire duration of their stay in Canada.

To meet the Super Visa health insurance requirements, a non-Canadian health insurance provider must meet the following criteria:

  1. It must be authorized by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) under the Insurance Companies Act to offer accident and sickness insurance.
  2. The provider must be listed on the OSFI’s list of federally regulated financial institutions.
  3. The provider must be issuing or offering the policy as part of its regular insurance business operations in Canada.
  4. It must be valid for at least one year from the date of entry into Canada.
  5. It can be paid in full or through installments, with a deposit.
  6. It must cover healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation.
  7. minimum healthcare coverage of $100,000..

When entering Canada, Super Visa holders must be ready to present proof of payment for their insurance plan to a border services officer.
