"Canada Connects: Government Initiative Helping Newcomers Integrate into Communities"
Canada Connects is a mentorship and community integration program supported by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The initiative is designed to help newcomers settle in Canada by connecting them with local mentors, including long-time residents and former immigrants. These mentors provide guidance, help newcomers navigate Canadian culture, practice language skills, and build social networks.
Key aspects of Canada Connects include:
Peer Connections: Newcomers are paired with community members to build relationships and reduce isolation.
Skill Enhancement: Participants improve communication and understanding of Canadian social norms and workplace culture.
Mutual Understanding: The program fosters awareness between Canadians and newcomers about the immigrant experience.
Broader Settlement Support: It complements other IRCC-funded settlement services, such as language training, employment support, and orientation services.
To participate, newcomers must be eligible for IRCC settlement services, which are typically available to permanent residents, refugees, and some temporary residents.
